Ask a question

Buttock augmentation surgery, sometimes referred to as a Brazilian butt lift when fat transfer is involved, uses implants, fat grafting or sometimes a combination of both to increase the size of the buttocks. This procedure can:

  • Increase fullness, roundness and projection of the buttock
  • Improve the balance of the figure
  • Enhance the self-image and self-confidence

Buttock augmentation surgery is right for someone who does not like the shape of their buttock or is looking to balance the body. It is commonly performed in one of two ways, with implants or fat transfer. The fat transfer procedure is commonly known as a "Brazilian butt lift."

You may be a good candidate for buttock augmentation if:

  • You are physically healthy
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your buttock is too small
  • You are unhappy with the roundness or general shape of your buttock
  • Your buttock is asymmetrical

A Brazilian butt lift (gluteal sculpting) is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. Improving the appearance of the buttock usually starts with removing unwanted fat from around the buttock to help better define the buttock’s aesthetic subunits. After removing the unwanted fat from around the buttock, additional fat may be removed from other areas of unwanted excess such as the back, abdomen and thighs. The harvested fat cells are placed in between muscle layers and close to a blood supply where they have a greater chance of survival instead of being absorbed by the body. Fat transfer also creates new collagen since fat contains stem cells that help create new tissue, improving the texture of skin. The fat transfer is made through very small incisions into the buttocks. The fat restores shape and volume, tightens the skin, all while providing a more youthful appearance and shape. The procedure may take anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours, depending on various factors such as the amount of fat that needs to be removed and the desired shape and size of the buttocks.

Buttock augmentation results are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. The final results of the buttock augmentation with implants will appear over the next few months as the implants, buttock shape and position continue to settle. If the procedure was performed with fat transfer, it usually takes a month to begin to feel normal and six to see the final results. Some of the fat that leads to the initial shape may be reabsorbed by the body.

After a Brazilian butt lift is very important to avoid pressure on the butt. The fat grafts survive best with minimal outside pressure and squishing. Moreover, pressure in certain areas and not others could create an irregular contour. For one week after a Brazilian butt lift the patient needs to avoid lying or sitting. This means you can’t sit or lie on your back-for 1 week you have to lie on your sides, lay on your stomach or stand. The only time it is ok to sit is when you are on the toilet.. After 1 week you may sit with your buttock suspended in the air. This means placing a towel, pillow or cushion under your thighs (not your butt) to suspend your buttock in the air. After 4 weeks you may start laying on your back and sitting normally.

If the procedure was performed with fat transfer, it is important to keep in mind that this fat can behave like any other fat in the body. If the patient gains weight, the fat in the buttocks may grow. If cases of losing weight, a lost of some of the volume in the buttocks may occur as the fat shrinks. As long as the patient maintains the weight, the chances are good that the results will continue for many years without the need for retreatment.
