Rhinoplasty - Nose Correction Plastic Surgery

Ask a question

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to change the shape or size of the nose. It is also known as "Nose Job" or "Nose reshaping" and can restore or correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

The rhinoplasty can treat nose size, nose width at the bridge, the size and shape of the nostrils, nasal tip, different assymetry and also a deviated septum. The nose surgery can be Primary or Secondary. A Primary Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic or reconstructive surgery of the nose on someone who has not had surgery in the past. A Secondary Rhinoplasty is a revision rhinoplasty. Depending on the each indidvidual, the procedure generally takes approximately 1 to 2 hours to perform.

The rhinoplasty consultation is the time to discuss the surgical goals, the procedure steps, the recovery process, surgical risks and safety and also your medical and mental condition, previous surgeries etc.

Every nose is different and this is why it is important to spend time talking about the issues a patient has with the particular nose and along with cosmetic concerns, you should speak with your surgeon about functional issues, such as difficulty breathing. This will help both you and your surgeon to understand your rhinoplasty goals. Your surgeon should then let you know how realistically rhinoplasty can achieve them.

Rhinoplasty can be performed using either open or closed techniques. One is called Open Rhinoplasty and the other is Closed Rhinoplasty. In general, the open technique allows for more accurate and substantial modification of the nasal tip. The open technique (incision across the columella) may also cause less disruption to the normal nasal tip support mechanisms when a hump reduction is required. Keeping the nasal tip support mechanisms intact is important as this helps to ensure that the tip remains in the same position years after surgery. The closed approach may be appropriate when changes are to be made to the bridge but not the tip of the nose (or very small changes are planned for the tip) and there is a possibility that final result may be less ideal than if the open approach were used.

The earliest age to consider a Rhinoplasty is 16 years for a female and 18 years for male. For teens under the age of 18, a parental consent is required.

The patient who is about to have a rhinoplasty surgery must be at the hospital early in the morning with no intake of food or drinks in the last six hours. The medical tests and examinations, required for the anesthesia will be made on the same day. After the results are ready and the patient is cleared for surgery, the procedure will start.

After the surgery, the patient remains in the hospital for at least 48 hours for observation. During the surgery a plastic splint is plased on the nose and also a nasal tampons in both of the nostrils. The nasal packs stays for up to three days and the splint is removed on the tenth day after the procedure. The patient can eat normally. A pain is rarely reported. Usually the patient doesn’t need any painkillers, but some can be prescribed if needed. There can be some briusing or/and swelling which depends on each patient indidviduality and skin type. For the first 24 hours after the surgery the patient must apply ice-packs to prevent further bruising and swelling. The bruises and the swelling can get larger during the first days, but they are going to reduce their size and intensity for 3 to 5 days.

Many patients are able to perform their daily activities on the 3rd day after the rhinoplasty, but most wait untill the day the splint is removed, so they can renew  their social life. However, the minimal residual swelling that is typical of rhinoplasty takes one year to resolve which means that achieving the final results can take up to one year. And this may result in improved results over time.

The intake of Aspirin before a surgical procedure is strictly forbidden.
