Ask a question

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size and shape of a woman’s external genitalia, the labia minor or labia majora.

Labiaplasty can be performed on the labia major or the labia minor (the “wings” of soft tissue on either side of the vaginal opening). The procedure can be performed alone or with vaginoplasty-vaginal rejuvenation.

The labia minora are the smaller pieces of tissue situated inside the labia majora. If these are elongated, sometimes they may become chronically inflamed leading to discomfort and pain with exercise or sexual activity.Labia minora reduction reduces the length and size of this tissue for a more proportionate and symmetrical appearance. Often, clitoral hood reduction is performed at the same time. The labia majora are the outer lips located at the vaginal opening and may grow larger or longer. When an excess tissue is creating physical or emotional discomfort, labia majora reduction is the ideal solution. This procedure involves removal of an elliptical-pattern piece of tissue through a small, hidden incision. In some cases, the outer lips are not elongated, but deflated and this issue can be fixed with dermal fillers or fat grafting.

Labiaplasty is performed under general anesthesia and lasts from 45 to 60 minutes.Sometimes ice can be used during the first few days to help alleviate swelling and pain/discomfort.Pain medication is prescribed if needed.Recovery time varies depending on the particular procedure performed. Sutures placed during the operation are the dissolvable and do not need to be removed. It can take four to six weeks to resume exercises, sexual intercourse and tampon use to avoid irritation of the incision sites.
