Dermal Fillers/Hyaluronic Acid

Ask a question

Dermal fillers are commonly used in medicine as an instant esthetic treatment.

Dermal filler treatments can regain lost volume, fill and tone stubborn wrinkles, plump up hollows and folds, enhance the lips, cheekbones and chins, also refine the jawlines and bring renewed vitality to areas most prone to wrinkle formation.

As the skin ages, the dermis gradually loses its major constituents: collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Collagen acts as the major support protein for the skin, elastin allows it to stay firm and resist wrinkles and hyaluronic acid helps to trap water and add volume and shape to the skin.

Dermal fillers are substances that are injected just below the surface of the skin to fill in lines, wrinkles and scars. Unlike face lifts that stretch the skin, fillers add volume for a more natural and youthful appearance. Fillers can also increase the fullness of the lips and lessen the downward slant of the corner of lips. The most common areas treated are the smile lines around the nose and mouth /nasolabial fold/, fine lines above the mouth and frown lines between the eyes.

There are many different hyaluronic acid fillers available depending on its substance and different fillers have different qualities, so using the best possible filler for each area of treatment is the key to achieve the most natural and beautiful result possible.Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers are versatile, long-lasting fillers that primarily contain Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar found in the human body that attracts and binds water which enhances the volume of the skin and comes in various forms.

Popular areas for dermal fillers are:

-Nasolabial Lines: Lines from the nose to the mouth where deep creasing can occur.
-Glabellar Lines: Lines caused by frowning which are not removed by botox.
-Marionette lines: Lines running from the corners of the mouth towards the chin causing deep creases
-Peri-Oral Lines: Lines around the mouth usually caused by smoking- a combination of botox and hyaluronic acid fillers will usually give best results in this area
-Cheeks: The ‘apples’ of the cheeks can be lost through ageing and loss of collagen causing drooping and a tired appearance. Dermal fillers injected deeper into the cheeks helps to restore the volume and contours, lifting the face and giving a more rounded, youthful look. Lifting the cheek area can also sometimes reduce the severity of naso-labial lines

-Lips: For Lip Enhancement

The procedure takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and the filler can be injected under local anesthesia. After the procedure there may be redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, and/or itching near the injection site.Until the swelling and redness have resolved, avoid intense heat in the treated area(s). This includes sunbathing, tanning, saunas, hot tubs or hot wax. Also avoid extreme cold such as skiing or other winter sports. To help alleviate bruising, we recommend the topical application of Arnica - a natural ointment commonly used to reduce bruising.

Dermal fillers are temporary with the effects lasting up to 18 months, although individuals will break down the product at different rates. There are no permanent effects from dermal fillers and the treatment is reversible.

Note: Don't confuse dermal fillers with other injectables like Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, which are wrinkle relaxers. Although like fillers these products are “injectables,” they work in very different ways: wrinkle relaxers temporarily paralyze muscles that cause wrinkles. They do not fill, plump or enhance an area. They can, however, be used along with fillers.
